US Lacrosse has announced the boys’ and girls’ players selected as 2018 US Lacrosse High School All-Americans and All-Academic Team members. Over 980 boys and 1,000 girls players were recognized for their efforts on and off the field.

A US Lacrosse All-American is a player who exhibits superior skills and techniques and possesses exceptional game sense and knowledge. A US Lacrosse All-American is one of the best players in the United States, while also embodying excellent sportsmanship.

A US Lacrosse All-Academic honoree is a player who exhibits exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represents high standards of academic achievement in the classroom.

In addition to players named as All-Americans and All-Academic honorees, US Lacrosse selects winners of the Coach of the Year, as well as the Bob Scott Award for boys and the Jackie Pitts Award for girls. These awards recognize one player from each area who go ‘above and beyond’ in service to his/her team, school, and community.

US Lacrosse oversees the selection of the awards, which are administered locally by Area Chairs. Selections are based on voting by coaches within each geographical area.

Note: Some local areas have not yet reported their selections and are not included in the All-America and/or All-Academic listings. Entries will be added as the selections are received.

FREDERICA, Del. – Reilly Holleran is the lone wolf on the Evolve Canada (Ontario) 2020 lacrosse team.

He is the team’s only American and admits he’s never played box lacrosse in his life. But Holleran, an LSM from Episcopal School (VA), is a good fit.

Reilly Holleran, 2020 LSM (Evolve Canada, Episcopal School-VA)

“My teammate at Episcopal, Dylan James, who is Canadian, told me in the fall of my sophomore year, ‘Hey we (Evolve) don’t have enough poles, can you come out to Baltimore for one tournament?’” said Holleran Sunday at the Victory Events Liberty National Elite Classic at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex.

“I said, ‘Yeah, sure’ and I met the guys and I loved it. They are all happy and funny; my type of people. I bonded with them, and now I am stuck with them. I am the token American.”

Holleran proved his mettle last weekend. He helped Evolve win the 2020 A championship with a 9-3 win over Top Caliber, and on Friday he was named an All-Star at the Liberty National Showcase (the scheduled All-Star Game Saturday was canceled due to inclement weather). The event Friday attracted 290 athletes and over 90 coaches; in all over 125 coaches attended during the weekend.

“The Canadians are a different breed and they play a different game,” Holleran said. “They all told me I play Canadian defense; they are fast, aggressive and get on their hands. If they get beat, they slide and they are cool with contact. It’s fast; that’s what I like about it.”

In Friday’s showcase, Holleran said he meshed quickly with his teammates.

“I went into Friday and I really just wanted to have fun and adjust to the heat,” he said. “I wanted to get to know the guys on the team. That’s the best way to play; you’ve got to know the guys around you. You have to gain chemistry on both sides (offensively and defensively).

“I bonded really well with the goalies. On clears they trusted me to take it up the field and I got some good looks.”

Holleran is not tall, but he is strong.

“They call me ‘Muscles.’ That’s my biggest strength; they make fun of me,” he said with a smile. “I try to be (strong). Even though I am short, I try to put on as many pounds as I can so I don’t get knocked down.”

Holleran said his Evolve squad has great chemistry.

“We do have a lot of good chemistry,” he said. “Our coach brings everything together and our defense meshes. Our goalies, Cole George (Everest Academy) and Dawson Lippert, pull it all together. They are loud and they communicate.”

Jack Naughton, 2020 ATT (Duke’s Elite, Shady Side Academy-PA)

Reflections from other All-Stars:

Jack Naughton, Shady Side Academy, PA Dukes Elite, 2020 Attack (committed to Holy Cross following the showcase)
“My ultimate goal was to get exposure and get recrited and I achieved that when I committed to Holy Cross. I am very grateful to Coach (Ian) Farley (Offensive Coordinator). Their staff is great, head coach (Peter) Burke is amazing and so are the rest of the coaches. Just like at every showcase, you don’t know anyone so it’s all about making connections and bonding as a team. My goal was to make my showcase team play as a team and to get them pumped up. We went 3-0, which is nice. The team was great and very competitive. I learned you have to play fast all the time and to dodge with a purpose. I have to work on getting bigger and faster and playing smarter by building my lacrosse IQ.”

Nicholas Mormando, 2021 ATT (Duke’s MainLine, Interboro-PA)

Nicholas, Mormando, Interboro, PA, Duke’s Mainline, 2021 Attack
“I think my shooting was good and our team did well in the Showcase. There were a lot of rising seniors and the competition was hard. But it was a great learning experience; you had to get through adversity and learn your teammates and build the teamwork. Our high school season went well, I think we were 10-7 with limited numbers (Mormando had 52 goals and was second team All-Pioneer Athletic Conference). It was always a battle. I have to work on my stamina, my left hand, and fundamentals in general. You never stop practicing. As a program (Dukes Mainline) is building every practice and every game to get better and better. We have to keep adapting to adversity.”

Liam Jones, 2020 ATT (TriState, Princeton Day School-NJ)

Liam Jones, Princeton Day School, NJ Tristate, 2020 Attack
“It was really hard to stand out with 290 kids there. So I tried to help us play as a team and hope we had a lot of success, thinking that would get me there (to the All-Star Game). I looked for the back side because at a lot of showcases most people don’t know each other and usually there is a one-slide but never a two-slide. I am looking for a high academic school with good lacrosse, D3 or D1. I feel I have to get better with my off hand and be more dynamic on dodging. Those two go hand-in-hand; if you can go both ways it’s easier to dodge.”

Joseph Giannella, 2020 MF (NJ Riot Rockland, North Rockland-NY)

Joseph Giannella, North Rockland, NY, NJ Riot (Rockland-NY), 2020 Midfield
“The Showcase was really fun and had a lot of competitive guys. I really just wanted to play my hardest and get some good two-way middie runs while getting the other guys involved. I am looking at five schools – at D3 so I can make an impact in my freshman year. This is our first year as Riot Rockland and we’re just trying to get more people involved (with the ball) and get them moving off the ball. I like pushing the ball, playing both ways, and getting the attack involved.”

Eric Thompson, 2020 MF (Resolute, St. Xavier-OH)

Eric Thompson, St Xavier, OH, Resolute, 2020 Midfield
“There was a lot of D1 competition at the Showcase. Coming in, I just wanted to show the coaches I could play. I think communication with your new teammates is key – even though you just got together. I felt my defense and offense were good. I pride myself on my defense and not letting him get top side. On offense, my strength is my alley dodge and being able to score on the run. I am looking at D1 or D2 and I am open to D3 but looking at D1 or D2. I think I need to keep my head on a swivel on defense and work on my left alley dodge.”

FREDERICA, Del. – Ben Tompkins says he had the best role model while serving as the backup to All-Inter-Ac League and All-EPLCA goalie Carson Marano this year at Penn Charter.

All-Tournament boys from the Cascade Elite 80 (from left) – Tyler Carney, Jack Ansart, Ben Tompkins

“He’s helped me enormously,” said Tompkins. “He was a great leader. He helped me with my footwork when it was sloppy and he helped me with my mental aspect. He also helped me learn to juggle, which helps your hand eye coordination.”

Now Tompkins is hoping to land the starting spot at Penn Charter for the 2020 season since Marano will play at NCAA Division III finalist Amherst. Tompkins is confident that the past two days spent at the Cascade Elite 80 at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex will greatly help his development.

The event – run by Legacy Global lacrosse – featured a large percentage of instruction from college coaches, a recruiting seminar and showcase games. Tompkins, rangy at 6-foot-2, 2021 from Coatesville, was the lone Philly boy to make the All-Tournament team (see full list below).

“I came here 2 years ago and I remember that the talent was great,” said Tompkins. “The whole event also was fun. There were a lot of practices instead of just games. You got to know each other. It was a great learning experience and a great time to get seen.”

Tompkins (who plays club for Feeedom) served as a reserve at Bishop Shanahan – which won the PIAA Class AA state title – as a freshman and then transferred to Penn Charter last year.

At the Elite 80, Tompkins said he learned many skills he believes will help him succeed in the highly-touted Inter-Ac.

“I had two goalie coaches here and one thing they taught me was when the attackman wraps around the crease to take a step back in to take up more of the net,” Tompkins said. “I tried it in the last game and it worked. They helped me with clearing and also taught me to do a drop pass.

“The games were great and all of them were close.”

Tompkins knows what he has to work on.

“I have to work on stepping and attacking the ball,” Tompkins said. “Carson was fierce no matter where the ball was going. He was straight to it. He always had his whole body over the ball. He was not scared of it at all. He gives it his all; I just have to follow his footsteps and do what he did.”

Others that excelled (with their reflections on the event):

Brynn Klueber, 2022 ATT, Academy of Notre Dame-PA/Philly Blast

Girls’ Standouts at the CASCADE Elite 80 (from left) – Ava Delyra, Brynn Klueber, Aimie Perino
“I wanted to come because of the competition to play at the higher level and to compete with older girls. I also wanted to see how coaches from different colleges interact with the players so I could look for future schools I might be interested in. I thought the instruction was great. One coach would stop us in the middle of practice and correct us and tell us what we could be doing better. I can bring some things I learned to my club team. It definitely helps to work with other girls; I probably made 20 or 30 new friends. The ratio of coaches to players was great; there was more instruction. I feel like I made a really good connection with the coaches.”

Ava Delyra, 2022 Goalie, Wando, S.C./Ct Dodgers

“I came last year and really enjoyed it. I like playing against high level players to help raise my game and play with girls looking to go to the next level. I felt the competition was really good. My dad was a goalie and he has kind of been helping me throughout the years. I think i have pretty quick hands; that probably my strong suit. I learned a lot about recruiting, and to not be afraid to try new things.”

Aimie Perino, 2022 MF, Vestavia Hills-AL/Hotbama

“Alabama is not that big in lacrosse and this was a great opportunity for me. To be seen closer and have 1-on-1 time with college coaches was great. In Alabama I have to travel 2 hours to a Division I school. I learned so much from the coaches, especially since we had a better ratio. I play midfield so the first day we worked on getting the quick first start, especially on the circle. That could also can translate on attack with a penalty shot or on D by trying to getting my stick in the way. We also learned that coaches while recruiting are not just looking on ball. They like to see you moving off ball to help teammates out. Everybody wants to score but when you don’t score the coaches might see something else that maybe the parents don’t.”

Jack Ansart, 2021 ATT, West Springfield-MA/Connecticut Valley, Attack MVP

“Where I am from, there is decent lax. But coming up here, it’s more fast paced. This taught me a lot about playing fast paced and against fast paced players. I was used to being one of the best players; they taught me to fight and work for what I am going to get. They also taught me to have fun playing lacrosse. That’s what the sport is about. The first day told us size doesn’t matter and to use your body. As long as you get leverage and play aggressively, it doesn’t matter what your size is – you can beat them. This helped me game, especially my aggressiveness. I noticed when I used aggressiveness in the second day I got more looks.”

Tyler Carney, 2020 G, Rutherford B. Hayes HS-OH, Goalie MVP

“It was supposed to be high level talent and it was. We got more coaching; they were more here to coach us than recruit us. I learned a lot and also got seen by college coaches. Being a goalie, I learned I was standing up too straight. One coach told me to get on my knees and that helped me a lot. I learned you have to be more vocal and that being a loud goalie helps. I also worked on being able to outlet the ball quickly and efficiently. It will help especially at the college level.”

Nick Robinson, 2020 FOGO, North Paulding-GA/Wasatch LC, FO MVP

Nick Robinson

“There was amazing instruction from the college coaches. They talked all about wing play – you never hear too much instruction on that. It was great to get out here for the recruiting. The competition was very good, similar to the Inside Lacrosse Invitational. Playing against these guys is great experience and it will help me get better. I thought the coaching here was awesome; sometimes you go to a showcase and some coaches are just there to coach (and not instruct). Every coach here knew exactly what they were talking about.”
